Our Improving Commercial Tax Base

Cheltenham Township was originally developed as a bedroom community. That means businesses were a necessary evil. Supermarkets and conveniences were acceptable, but office buildings, manufacturing, even gas stations were not very welcome. That left the burden of taxes to support the Township falling on the homeowner.

Fast forward 50 years to the end of 2017. After years of work*, we finally adopt a new zoning code. This time it is oriented to being more business and mixed use friendly. The results have been inspiring to say the least. The crown jewel is right here in ward 3, the Elkins Estate development. This will be a wonderful mixed use addition to our community featuring a boutique hotel, conference center, recording studio, state of the art culinary (and teaching) kitchens, an outdoor bandshell, restaurant....and the list goes on. This is an exciting project that could never have happened without the zoning changes and the cooperation of both the School district and the County.

This is only the beginning. Word has gotten out that Cheltenham is open for business. New businesses have opened up all around the Township. The Easton road and Glenside area is having its own renaissance with shops, restuarants and breweries opening up regularly.

The point is simply this; I asked you to make me your Commissioner so these things could be accomplished. Now I'm asking you to re-elect me so I can continue what we've started.

*15 to be exact. In 2002 I was asked to be a part of the committee that put together the Township's Comprehensive Plan. This is the 10 year blueprint that establishes the vision for where we want the Township headed. Next came 10 years on the ad hoc zoning committee and select zoning committee to help write the zoning that would enable the vision of the comprehensive plan. Finally, as a Commissioner, we were able to get it over the goal line and adopt the new code.
